Abstract

Student participation is considered a central requirement of higher education and is regarded as an essential element of good teaching and academic involvement in higher education. However, in practice there are discrepancies between the desired level of participation and the perceived participation of students. This article examines which favorable and obstructive factors influence student participation and which measures higher education institutions can take to enable and facilitate participation. The analysis is based on a survey of students at Hamburg University of Applied Sciences. The results show that students are generally very interested in involvement and consider participation to be important. The results are also used to report on the measures that have already been taken to promote student participation at Hamburg University of Applied Sciences following the survey, and how higher education institutions can generally promote student participation.
