Abstract
In a qualitative-empirical research project, the perspectives of students on involvement in student councils at the University of Cologne were examined. The aim is to identify the factors that influence students' willingness to participate and to understand how they perceive their experiences in the context of student self-administration. Particular attention is paid to the social dynamics within the student councils, which function both as places of political participation and as social communities. The findings illustrate the importance of the social environment for student council participation and provide practical pointers for the further development of student council structures, university political participation and the organisation of teaching and studies. Targeted promotion of student council participation could therefore not only strengthen the quality of student co-determination but also contribute to the further development of higher education.
